Howard Trotter, Business Manager at Birmingham windows and doors manufacturer Shelforce, has been awarded the Heart Of The Industry award at this year’s National Fenestration Awards (NFAs).
In what is only the second year the award has featured in the NFAs, Howard’s dedication to his workforce alongside his work with special needs schools and the wider community won the judges over.
“I’m really proud to win this award so would like to say thank you to the NFAs,” commented Howard.
“As it’s only the second ever Heart of the Industry Award, I’m honoured. But it’s not just down to me, and everyone at Shelforce plays a part in making it such a great work environment where people can thrive.
“It’s great to see our hard work and dedication recognised by the industry with this award.”
Shelforce manufacture PVCu windows and doors for local authority housing projects and are Birmingham City Council’s chosen manufacturer of choice.
75% of its workforce is disabled and the company is leading the way in the industry when it comes to inclusive employment and making a difference.
Howard’s dedication to training and nurturing the skills of his workforce have seen production efficiency increase by 759% since he joined in 2013.
One of Howard’s aims is to encourage other businesses to adopt Shelforce’s inclusive, integrated employment approach and he spoke at the Glazing Summit recently on the subject.
Shelforce are also in the process of setting up a dedicated training facility to welcome students from nearby schools, including special needs schools, and offer regular work experience placements.
“Attracting more young people and diversity into the industry is hugely important to tackle the skills shortage,” added Howard.
“We need to engage with young people and get the message out that it’s a highly-skilled industry that provides career opportunities to get them through the door.
